Geek Magic
Geek Magic (9:28 min.) by Austin Luce also qualified for 2007 Nationals. Notice how he coordinates his clothing with the color of his boards, and how he continues the theme by dressing like a magician. Can you figure out the main points (body) of the script from (1) his words and (2) his props?
He did a good job using transition words (first, then) and giving a final review at the end of the speech. Did you like the sound effects and the moveable parts?
Crayons
Here’s another expository speech that went to 2007 Nationals by Mitch Foemming on Crayons (9:18 min.) Pay attention to his use of “ATTENTION, please!” and a SURPRISE near the end of the speech. Notice how he moves from left to right and right to left across the floor.
Given the theme of his speech, did you think his visuals were colorful enough? Did you like the use of role-playing?
Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne Pepper (9:43 min.) is by Bronte Smith also qualified for 2007 Nationals. Wait until you see her props! Notice her use of story for the “ATTENTION, please” component of her script. Her hand gestures and body movement all work with the subject matter.
Do you feel like you learned some new things about cayenne pepper that you never knew before?
Dr. Seuss
This next expository video, Dr. Seuss (9:27 min.) by Micah Webber, won 6th place at the 2007 Nationals. Look for a SURPRISE prop. Also notice how he color-coordinates his boards with the book covers.
Did you like his “ATTENTION, please” quote?
The Sound of Music
Taking 3rd place at Nationals, this expository speech by Brady Clayton is called The Sound of Music (9:27 min.) Pay attention to how he uses his entire body (face, hands, legs, voice) to convey his message. Listen for his analogy of an atomic explosion v. broken hairs in your ears. He also reports the results of his own statistical survey which I think was very compelling.
Did you like the way he wrapped up the presentation by giving them a way to apply what they had learned to their own lives? You’ve got a problem and here’s what you can do about it.) Great expos speech.
Ethnomusicology
This expository speech entitled Ethnomusicology (9:50 min.) by Soren Rehn won 2nd place at the 2007 NCFCA National Tournament. He’s clever in the way he unifies his boards with the blue on black, and he uses both sides of the boards. Although the sound effects are not all pleasant, he uses the script and props successfully in the end in by calling us to lay down our prejudices. Very effective use of expos to do more than inform…call your audience to action.
Mistakes
Katie Riley took first place in the 2007 NCFCA National Tournament for her expository speech called Mistakes (time 9:32). The video and audio quality is not the best, but hang in there…the remaining videos are of much better quality. Pay attention to her hand gestures, facial animation, and movement; she’s very confident. Can you tell how many points she had in the body of her script?
Did you catch how many points she had? Did you notice that she had one board and one 3D object for each point? How did you like the sound effects and the moveable parts to the boards?
